You don’t have to figure out every moment alone.

You don’t have to figure out every moment alone. You imagined welcoming them home. You may not have imagined the hiding, the uncertainty around visitors, or wondering whether reaching out would help—or feel like too much. This guide gives you a practical place to begin. Created by Rose Waldrup, founder of Waldrup Somatic Method, Home Starts With Trust brings a body-aware approach to fostering and adoption: observe the dog, consider the setting, and choose a manageable next step. You don’t need a perfect dog—or a perfect first week—to start building a thoughtful relationship.

Our Mission.

Our mission goes beyond the first day home. We want more foster and adoptive placements to become safe, sustainable relationships. That means helping people prepare, recognize difficulties earlier, and ask for support before they feel overwhelmed. It also means helping useful knowledge travel with the dog—from shelter to foster to adopter. Home Starts With Trust is one part of that mission: practical information people can use, share with their household, and bring into conversations with their support team. Our goal is to support foster and adoption retention while protecting the wellbeing of dogs and the people caring for them. Sometimes that includes a supported transition to a different home. Because a successful placement needs support beyond the adoption photo.

Meet Rose Waldrup

Rose is the founder of Waldrup Somatic Method, an educational approach centered on body awareness, observation, and thoughtful interaction with dogs. Her work invites caregivers to ask a different question: “What is this experience like for the dog in front of me?” She created Home Starts With Trust to turn that question into practical everyday decisions—helping fosters, adopters, and rescue teams notice more, reduce pressure, and build a clearer plan together.
